Text boards are weird. On a certain text board, which is relatively active compared to most other ones, people sent me death threats because they disagreed with my posts, made a nickname for me even though I only posted anonymously, accused other people of being me, accused me of being other people, called me racial slurs, and then banned me. My last posts were about telling people to stop saying the n word and that phones are becoming more popular than computers. I got banned for that, but the racist people who send death threats and post creepy or racist things were allowed to stay. But they think they're in the right and I'm the bad guy. I don't understand people sometimes.
sucks to hear about that, friend
i think certain parts of the internet have built a community around an immature mob mentality and meaningless contrarianism
how it still hangs around is beyond me because all the humor in it has been beaten to death
you'd hope people would get more creative or at least more willing to actually discuss things
Yeah, it seems like contrarianism combined with shock value for the sake of shock value. I also think this experience has taught me about social norms (and maybe also social media bubbles). On that site, certain things that are not okay in real life are accepted there. But when you call people out for their normalization of bad or strange things, they get mad and basically say "well, that's how it's always been on this website" and then other people back them up on it.
a lot of people on the internet are not very mature; this is what is meant by "the internet is full of children".
this place actually has a lot of really creative discussion, though, and I think textboards are largely responsible for a lot of the insightful thought online today, but still you sometimes find rotten people. I hope it all works out soon.
I don't know if you're posting this ironically (I hope you are), so I'm gonna bite it.
You can't take them seriously. Or do you really think anyone threatening you on a texboard actually wants you to die?
Of course it is immature to call everyone a nigger, just like it is immature to call Indians pajeets or Chinese chinks, but it's not like people shooting those offenses are actually racists or white supremacists. It's just humour for them, even though it is so saturated that I don't find it funny anymore.
You also can't forget that most of those offensive terms have fallen into semantic saturation, so you can't say they really mean what they're saying.
I won't say I'm thankful for this "contrarian" culture, but it has at least taught me not to get offended by everything. I've met lots of people that'd often call third world countries 'shitholes' online, but get really interested in my language and culture. Don't get offended by those things, bud.
Bullies need safe spaces too
>I don't know if you're posting this ironically (I hope you are), so I'm gonna bite it.
Why does everything have to be ironic on text and image boards? Ugh.
>You can't take them seriously. Or do you really think anyone threatening you on a texboard actually wants you to die?
I never said I believe they're going to try and kill me. But does that make it ok for people to tell me in great detail about how they're going to track me down and stab me to death in my sleep? No. Why are you siding with trolls like that? Seriously.
>Of course it is immature to call everyone a n*****, just like it is immature to call Indians ******* or Chinese ******, but it's not like people shooting those offenses are actually racists or white supremacists. It's just humour for them, even though it is so saturated that I don't find it funny anymore.
Ok, so you're justifying trolls and racism. I have a feeling that you're a troll too if you think it's ok.
Try and tell people in real life what you just wrote here to me. It won't go over well. You are seriously trying to justify death threats and racism.
It's not the 90s. Real life isn't separate from the internet anymore.
I didn't say they were right to do those things, so I am not justifying their behaviour. But the thing is, the internet IS separate from real life, especially if you're posting anonymously, we're not on a social network.
I did not say their death threats were ok either, I just told you not to take it seriously because it seems pretty obvious that they're not actually threatening you. It is just so common for them to read that online that it doesn't have the meaning it should have (remember what I said about semantic saturation? That applies here too). Even if it's not just a "kys", but a detailed death threat, I doubt that person's wishing death upon you.
About the racial slurs, I've already made my point. Those people are probably not the racists you think they are and the terms have fallen into semantic saturation on the internet, which is why they definetly wouldn't say that IRL.
Fun Fact: Most of the people in my country are brown or black, so we are basically call each other 'monkeys' on a daily basis on local imageboards.
I'm not on anyone's side, but don't forget that you're dealing with underages when you talk about imageboards. I won't be replying anymore since I think you're just trolling (or I just want to believe that you're not actually getting offended by underages online).
By the way, I'm a proud monkey.
"we are basically call each other 'monkeys' on a daily basis on local imageboards", never in real life. Just wanted to highlight that for ya.
*we are basically calling.
lol nigger op
the very reason to not do that is because semantic saturation decreases the density of communication, which leads people seeking real communication elsewhere, and if there are no other ways to express the ideas than by what they semantically saturated, then there is no way to express those ideas at all. if what were semantically saturated are destructive, then staying in a medium saturated with semantically saturated destructives breeds apathy at best.
