Aside from the Wikipedia definition, I'd define it as a weird/pseudo melancholy but also laughing about how weird things are type vibe. Kind of sad, kind of amused. Like when you think you've hit rock bottom, and then things somehow manage to get even worse, and you can't help but laugh about it. A weird bemused and conflicted feeling. Sort of like outsider art to express complex emotions.

Internet insults have gotten really lazy in recent years. People are quick to insult each other online, but most people don't put any effort into it. Are people less interested in meeting new people online?

Back when the internet was new(er), people were eager to try out chatrooms on AOL and talk to random strangers about things. Now? People would prefer to use the internet as TV 2.0 (Netflix and Youtube), or just post pictures of themselves on Instagram, usually for their close friends they know in person. There are some exceptions, of course, but it seems like there was a shift in attitude for the average internet user in going from being interested in "exploring the information superhighway" and meeting new people to just being an extension of boring non-internet life, which has made it seem more normie-ish and lackluster in some ways. Or maybe this is all just rose-tinted glasses nostalgia bullshit on my part.

What do you think?

Survivorship bias, lack of empathy, poverty, trauma, and "hard work"

People who had good upbringings, born into wealth, in a high-functioning, non-abusive family, don't seem to understand why some people are successful while others aren't.

People who had nice lives and make a lot of money don't seem to understand that not everyone else had the same opportunities they did.

They didn't have alcoholic parents who always fought and ended up splitting up and tried to get you to take sides with their countless petty arguments. They didn't have a sister who was murdered by her boyfriend. They weren't molested when they were young. They were beaten up by their dads and then forced by their mom to lie about it. They weren't homeless while working a shitty job while trying to get back into college. They didn't have to worry about making ends meet every month. They didn't have to deal with health problems they couldn't get help for due to a lack of insurance. They didn't have to live in dangerous neighborhoods. They didn't have to deal with untreated mental health problems. They don't wake up every night having nightmares about traumatic things from the past.

And yet, these are the people who go on to become life coaches or counselors or therapists or psychiatrists and then lecture worse-off people about how "depression is just a chemical imbalance in your brain" instead of being due to your shitty life that wasn't a choice, but the only reality you knew. They tell you to just "work hard" but nobody ever got rich working at a fucking gas station. They tell you how college is so easy but they didn't have to work multiple jobs and help their crazy alcoholic family members with their issues all at the same time. They don't know what it's like to have problems. But these people, who don't even get that their success is because of the circumstances of their birth, their parents' success, and even luck, are the ones people listen to about how to become successful. It's all bullshit.

Then you get the people who get that poverty sucks, and generally have some level of empathy for people with problems -- but then they say shit like "you're privileged because you're white" even though you're actually mixed race but people are like "well you look sorta white" and they want to act like you have it easy and should be turned down for opportunities because of this "privilege" nonsense. As if being a certain race somehow means your life is just fucking perfect.

We're gonna fucking destroy the environment with fossil fuels and livestock farts. All those farts are gonna melt the ice caps and then florida and california will be under water. And temperatures will be so high that homeless people will die of heat strokes and you'll have to have an air conditioner 24/7, and it'll be too hot to go outside. Animals will die off in droves. We will follow soon after. Elites in their mansions and fancy cars won't think things are bad, but people in developing countries are fucked, and the economic issues of our time will intensify and the middle class in western countries will also decline.

I think Elon Musk is extremely harmful to the environment in the sense that his investors are rich businessmen who think it's okay to harm the Earth's environment just as long as Elon builds them rockets so they can go to space and maybe live on Mars while the rest of us filthy plebs live in a desolate, unlivable environment, in absolute squalor while they're drinking martinis and eating caviar and using the latest iDildos. If Elon didn't make this fantasy seem real, maybe rich people at the helm of highly-polluting companies would think that maybe they should do something differently to avoid catastrophe.

I have severe mental health issues which are ruining my life, but no matter how many people or clinics I reach out to, nothing changes. I've talked to counselors who are unhelpful. I've talked to many different people at my university who are unhelpful. My family is sympathetic, but also still unhelpful. My friends don't even understand my issues. Everything is getting worse and I don't know what to do. People say "just go to a counselor" as if that will do anything. I do see a counselor and they don't help at all. This "just talk to someone in a room" thing is only useful if you want to vent, not if you need mental health treatment. My mental health is continuing to decline and talking to a counselor in a room for 45 minutes every 2 weeks won't change that. This is stupid. Mental health treatment is a joke. I am going crazy but I am begging people for help, and... nothing. People said they could help me get a job. They lied about that and it amounted to nothing. But the people in that department still get paid to supposedly help people like me find placement, and they still get paid even when they don't do what they're supposed to. And counselors still charge money even when they fail to help you at all. People said they knew what would help with my mental health. Well if their "help" is so effective why am I continuing to get worse? It's all bullshit. The only people who benefit from mental health care are the people who are making money from it. Sure, when you have a nice salary and a family and no mental health issues or past trauma or worries about becoming homeless again, it seems obvious how to be happy and productive. But they don't know or understand where I'm coming from.

So far, he has sent me 5 walls of text saying why he has a life and technology is too hard to use and he's too busy to do what I told him to do. This has gone on for about a week now. He doesn't know how to copy and paste, and if I tell him how, he gets ANGRY and insists that he knows how to use a computer.

What the fuck is wrong with old people? Are they retarded? This guy has a master's degree and he has taken a week and is putting MASSIVE amounts of effort into justifying why he can't copy and paste something. He keeps implying that I am asking him to do a really difficult task. He says he has "technology phobia" and that's part of why he can't do even simple shit like this. What the hell?

This is so crazy that it almost sounds made up, but this kind of thing is a regular occurrence with him.

So go have some fun as much as you can before shit hits the fan. Or you could also take up the noble cause of destroying the human cancer and save the Earth. If you pick the latter choice here are some tips. The weak spot on the cancer is Agriculture, if you can destroy agriculture you will bring down the entire system. Many people will die including you but it'll destroy the cancer thus saving the Earth.

let's talk about what reality is. i subscribe to philosophical relativity and have multiple realities. my realities are hierarchically arranged with one metareality which i rarely use, but is there more for simplicity's sake, which allows me to have multiple working realities which can contradict each other, and sometimes themselves, but are useful nonetheless. in each reality i have multiple persons who share this human body who cooperate and share not only the physical resources, but also the mental resources and memories and thoughts and consciousness, it's not multiple personalities disorder where there are alter egos that sometimes fight for supremacy or are otherwise codiscordant. there are too many personalities to list here, and many of them are born or die, usually this happens multiple times per day, and often the lifetime of a temporary personality, which make up the majority, live for only a few minutes or hours or sometimes even days and are configured to most effectively complete a task and are set to efficiently self destruct after their purpose is complete. the more permanent ones are more background personalities meant to deal with their assigned social relations, of the oldest ones are those dealing with corporations such as banks, governments, insurances, excetera.

in any communication it is important to optimize

relevant information communicated / time

in an asynchronous communication medium longer and fuller messages are preferred because there is going to be an unknown length of time between sending the message and receiving a response. if the messages are not communicating everything they could and ought, then the delay between communications will rarefy the communication thread: those who will stay are those who do not really want to communicate much, and those actually want to have high quality on-topic discussions will eventually leave for other media, and then those that are left that want to have high quality communications but are for some reason not leaving will start (quite publicly) wondering why the place is dead, or full of BS, or some other impressionistic description of content sparse communication

It's easy to come to incorrect conclusions when the other people around you also believe the same incorrect things. I was on a programming-related site where people were dead wrong about certain things, but other people backed them up on it, so it was generally accepted in that circle that something was right.

On a larger scale, that's social acceptability.

There are people who believe things because other people them, and then there are the thinkers who try new things. It's much easier just to go with the status quo or Overton window, but it's harder to change things. Sometimes it's easier just to pretend to believe the falsehoods just because it's hard to sway public opinion. Galileo was right but nobody believed him because everyone else already "knew" incorrect things.

Echo chambers are very harmful for advancement and the pursuit of truth.

It's lame when educated people who grew up in middle or upper class families look down on poor people for not keeping up with modern moral trends (especially the ivory tower kind). It seems strange to me how there's this self-contradiction among liberals, where they pretend to be advocates for poor people, but at the same time, they like to demonize economically-disaffected people who are right-wing, and even celebrate them getting fired or having poor life conditions. Like, you can't expect someone to be a software engineer if their family was too poor to own a computer and their local library lacked adequate funding for tech infrastructure or training.

Sometimes people who come from well-off families tend to forget that people in worse circumstances weren't given the same opportunities. Like people who get degrees think that people who don't just were lazy or something, but perhaps they never had the dough for higher education, and maybe they lived in an impoverished area where the public school systems were garbage. In those kinds of environments, it's hard to succeed. Yet you still have privileged (I know that word sucks) people looking down on those in unfortunate circumstances.

I guess the general theme of this thread should be classism, the academia bubble (and how far-removed it is from regular society), survivorship bias, and shit like that.

My last posts were about telling people to stop saying the n word and that phones are becoming more popular than computers. I got banned for that, but the racist people who send death threats and post creepy or racist things were allowed to stay. But they think they're in the right and I'm the bad guy. Does anyone wear glasses / contacts, or otherwise have any vision correcting hardware?
I'm prescribed -4.25 diopters (L) and -4.75 dipoters (R) so without any correction I have trouble seeing. But I wear contacts anytime I go out so hardly anyone knows that I'm blind as shit anyway.

It's 2018 and I'm turning over a new leaf. I'm so sick of eating at national chains and have them give my money to the heebs, I can't even stand it. Yesterday I tried to have lunch at Subway and I just felt dirty afterwards.

This is now a regional specialty thread. If you live in the Carolinas regional specialty for hamburgers and chicken sandwiches is CookOut. Clean reliable food that offers plenty of Vitamins and they give back to the community. This is much much better than the Jews that were on McDonald's and Jack-in-the-Box. Simply horrible.

Do you give local vendors your business?

Human semen is the most spiritually-nutritious substance on Earth, even more so than Almonds, Cashews, and similar seeds. By learning to retain his semen a man can reach levels that the regular ejaculating man would consider super-human. Aging slows down, depression lifts, resentment is gone, energy returns in the morning, motivation floods back, the desire to mindlessly consume and chase impulses diminishes.

Like every other bodily process, the production of semen causes wear and tear on the body and, overtime, the ability to repair from this diminishes. While a 15 year old can ejaculate as much as he likes without noticeable impact on energy and temperament, a man over 25 cannot. If you are over 25 and still releasing semen (except for procreation if you must) you are not realizing your potential. As in, you literally cannot conceive of the changes that will take place after you have retained your semen for 1 month and on.

Everything comes at a price, the moment men stopped practicing semen retention in the west was the moment that women (who are happy to gobble up any semen a man produces) became dominant. That is the same reason most men become pussy-whipped quickly in marriage -- they are giving their semen-power to their wife and becoming pale shadows of men.

we've all heard about cyberpunk and cipherpunk, but here's something new:

textpunk.

That's right. Textpunk

Newspaper articles, BBSs (like this one), IRC, ASCII art, Kopipe, program source code, Novels, View HTML source, Google search engine, Mathematics, Hieroglyphics, The Rosetta Stone, Gutenberg Bible...

A textpunk doesn't sit there waiting for information to be slowly fed to him drip at a time by the gogglebox. A textpunk is thirsty for knowledge and 100% focused - they read old school hacker textfile zines. They don't waste their time with lame imageboarders: instead they're doing crazy abstract shitposting on /prog/ with thoughts and concepts twisted up so with many levels of irony that it becomes an art form.

Textpunks recognize and understand the true power of kopipe - how a well crafted piece of text can be so damn powerful that it alone can trigger thousands of replies with so much veracity within days. They see through things down into the core of what really counts, everything in the computer is built of text, ascii, strings of bits - They don't care about the latest 3D GUI environment fads. No, that's just a distraction. 7-bit clean ascii program source code. That's textpunk.

Look at how text has shaped humanity: The birth of writing systems was correlated with some of fastest advances of science and technology in early human history. Mass production of the Bible took power away from a few select monks and democratized paving the way for people to start thinking for themselves. Programming is text and it's the closest thing there is in the world to true wizardy and spell casting. Talking about real SICP-type programming here, not that modern garbage.

Today textpunks build up digital libraries of books and stick it to the copyright cartel. Schwarz, lib gen, the gentoomen library, and so many anonymous sources that tireless scan and collect books.. Textpunks are the people in tune with modern digital society of ultrafast cost-free transmission of text, they're the ones rethinking and revolutionizing publishing mixing it with open rights and making works available online.

if a professor incorporates a software to be used as homework, should they have some kind of obligation to inform the students about an open source version of it? (assuming they know one exists)

~my stats class uses JMP (provided by the skool), which costs 1.5*10^4 dollars. There is an open source version available, but its GUI is weak and it doesnt have all the cool stuff.

~should schools feel obligated to tell students about libre office and other open source alternatives that can replace 95% of the functionality of micro$lop office?

i feel like its a predicament cuz if you dont have experience with the real deal, you might be missing out on valuable software training/ experience compatibility issues across platforms.
